So again, last night I was rushed to the emergency ward after an allergic reaction to what we thought was a food allergy while dining in a delicatessen restaurant. It was a crepe restaurant that served “gaullettes” which is essentially crepes served as a meal (meat, vegetables, eggs, etc.) I got really dizzy and you could see the veins popping out of my forehead and throat. That’s two critical illnesses in the span of 7 days.
This was my very first allergic reaction to something I had consumed. I was scared real good, I felt like Edward Norton in mid-transition while becoming the hulk, only I was beat red, itchy from head to toe and I couldn’t breathe let alone speak. When I looked at my reflection in the side mirror of the car, I could see my grand-father… my face was so swollen that my skin got all pruned, I looked like a rump roast. At this point my aunt was crying with fear and put the pedal to the metal in route for the hospital.
Just as we were pulling up to the hospital I stumbled out of the car and puked like I had never puked in my life ever before. It was like a scene straight out of the exorcist… the vomit projected a good 10 feet before it hit the ground and continued for a solid 10 minutes. Once the puking was over with, I began to feel better and refused to go to the hospital. My aunt’s response was “well you definitely are from the Paul family” :p (the men in our family really don’t like doctors).
So at any rate, by the time we got home I still felt very itchy and couldn’t stop scratching myself. My aunt requested that I take off my shirt because she could see that not only my arms and face were red but my chest. So i removed my shirt and my entire body was cherry red with white dots. I began to think this was not a food allergy but a complication with the antibiotics that were given to me for my ear infection. Presumably, because I had been drinking beer and wine throughout the evening which you aren’t suppose to do while taking antibiotics.
So in light of this thought, my great-uncle requested that I give him the box of antibiotics I was taking so that he could read the instructions. Sure enough, he discovered that I was having an allergic reaction to the antibiotics… it wasn’t the mix of alcohol. Apparently, an allergic reaction will take days to be onset by taking these antibiotics which are from the “penicillin” family.
I immediately called home to find out if I was wrong about believe that I was free from medical allergies and to their knowledge I had never before… but ironically, my grand-father is allergic to penicillin. So there you have it, I like many others am allergic to penicillin. Once we had narrowed this down, my uncle was very concerned and called an at home doctor. When he arrived he confirmed that I was in fact allergic to penicillin and to stop taking these antibiotics immediately and to notify my familly doctor so that he could note it in my medical history. According to him, I’m lucky I pucked naturally or I would have had my stomach pumped at the hospital as I was at risk of dying.
This isn’t the first, second or third time I’ve cheated death. I’m just thanking my lucky stars that my body is smart enough to repair itself. A week ago my ear drum was flooded with mucus and had it not popped, I could have gone deaf… when I saw the doctor in that hospital, she was about to pop it for me but then saw that I had already popped it naturally. I think these are all signs that I have yet to fulfill my destiny and someone or something is watching over me
As a closing note, my mother is a physiatrist and gives prescriptions to her patients as well. When I showed her the dosage of antibiotics prescribed to me by the doctor here and France she just about queled over. I was told to take 3 grams of amoxicillin per day… whereas back home, the doctor would not have prescribed more than 250 miligrams per day (less than 1/4 the dose i’ve been taking daily). The dosage I was taking was in fact poisonous for anyone and would only ever be prescribed in a life or death situation. So I have the doctor in France to thank for risking my life. Can’t really complain can I… I came to Europe for an adventure and that’s just what I got
